Amazon DSP Opens ChatGPT Ads: What Advertisers Need to Know

Amazon DSP opens ChatGPT Ads to advertisers

Amazon DSP advertisers can now buy ads inside ChatGPT. Amazon Ads announced a partnership with OpenAI on September 10, 2026 that lets a select group of US advertisers extend campaigns already running in Amazon DSP into ChatGPT Ads, OpenAI's new ad inventory. The pilot is US only, runs as a managed service, and Delta Vacations is the first named brand testing it. Here is how it works, who controls what, and what B2B demand gen teams should take from it.

What did Amazon and OpenAI actually announce?

Per Amazon's announcement, ChatGPT Ads inventory is now available through Amazon DSP as a managed service. Amazon helps advertisers set up and optimize the campaigns, targets them with its first party shopping, browsing, and streaming signals, and OpenAI decides when and where the ads actually appear inside a conversation.

Ads show up as text and image units beneath ChatGPT's organic responses, carry sponsored labels, and can be bought on both a cost per click and CPM basis. Amazon is also offering product feed ads that build creative automatically from an advertiser's product catalog, per Search Engine Land.

This lands nine days after OpenAI's ad business crossed a reported $1 billion run rate. We covered that milestone and what it means for AI search visibility in our ChatGPT Ads run rate analysis. The Amazon deal is the distribution move that follows the revenue proof: OpenAI gets Amazon's massive advertiser base, and Amazon gets a conversational surface its DSP did not have.

How do ChatGPT Ads work through Amazon DSP?

The division of labor is the important part, because it tells you what you can and cannot control.

LayerWho owns itWhat that means
Campaign setup and optimizationAmazon (managed service)You brief Amazon; you are not hand-managing placements
Audience targetingAmazon first party signalsShopping, browsing, and streaming data, no ad identifiers
Ad delivery and placementOpenAIOpenAI's systems decide when and where ads appear in a chat
ReportingAggregatedImpressions, clicks, cost per result, CPM, CPC. No conversation level data

Buying is on CPC or CPM. Pilot rates are not public, and given the managed service model, expect minimums that favor mid market and enterprise budgets before self serve ever arrives.

Who should care, and is B2B even in scope?

The obvious fit is consumer brands with product catalogs, which is what the product feed format and the Delta Vacations pilot signal. But Search Engine Land flags the more interesting group: nonendemic advertisers, companies that do not sell on Amazon but already use Amazon DSP to reach audiences elsewhere. That includes plenty of B2B teams running DSP through agencies.

Two cautions before anyone gets excited. First, OpenAI reportedly blocks rival AI tools from advertising in ChatGPT, so software categories adjacent to AI may not clear policy. Second, this is a pilot: select advertisers, US only, no self serve. For most B2B budgets the near term play is not buying these ads. It is being the answer the organic response cites, which is the same AI search visibility work we flagged after the antitrust remedies in our Google ad tech ruling breakdown.

What should demand gen teams do now?

Three moves, in order of cost. First, get your measurement house ready: ChatGPT referral traffic is already showing up in analytics for most B2B sites, and paid conversational placements will blur that line further. Second, if you run Amazon DSP through an agency, ask your rep about the pilot waitlist now, because early inventory in a new channel is historically underpriced. Third, treat organic AI visibility as the hedge. Sponsored labels sit beneath organic answers, and the organic answer still carries the trust. That is a content and schema problem, the exact scope of our AI campaign plan, and if you want the paid side pressure tested first, the paid sprint starter exists for exactly this kind of new channel bet. Frequently asked questions

Can any advertiser buy ChatGPT ads through Amazon DSP?

Not yet. The integration is a pilot limited to a select group of US advertisers, run as a managed service through Amazon DSP. There is no self serve access, and no timeline has been announced for expansion beyond the US.

How are ChatGPT ads priced through Amazon?

Inventory is available on both a cost per click and CPM basis. Actual pilot rates have not been published by Amazon or OpenAI as of September 12, 2026.

Who decides where ads appear inside ChatGPT?

OpenAI. Amazon owns the buying relationship, campaign setup, and targeting data, but OpenAI's systems control ad delivery and placement inside conversations. Buying through Amazon does not buy placement control.

What do ChatGPT ads look like?

Text and image units that appear beneath ChatGPT's organic responses, marked with sponsored labels. Amazon also offers product feed ads that generate creative automatically from an advertiser's product catalog.

Do ChatGPT ads make sense for B2B companies?

Mostly not yet. The pilot favors consumer brands with catalogs, and OpenAI reportedly restricts rival AI tools from advertising. The nearer term B2B opportunity is earning citations in the organic answers the ads sit beneath.
