THE PLAY / FOR A PRICING AND PROMOTION OPTIMIZATION SOFTWARE VENDOR FOR GROCERY AND CONVENIENCE RETAILERS

01

Trigger

A contact is recommended when one of six signals fires on their company: executive hiring, tech investment, geographic or physical expansion, mergers and acquisitions, or a product launch. The enrollment rule adds contacts whose signal and persona title both match.

02

Audience

Pricing and merchandising leaders, plus finance, executive and IT leaders, at US and Canadian grocers above a revenue threshold, convenience chains with 25 or more stores, wholesalers and co-ops. Titles include VP or Director of Pricing, Merchant or Category Manager, Finance or Executive Leader, and IT or Data Leader.

03

Signals the agent reads

  • Executive hiring
  • Tech investment
  • Geo expansion
  • Physical expansion
  • Mergers and acquisitions
  • Product launch
04

Selling angle

Retailers that hire a new pricing leader, invest in new systems or expand their footprint usually inherit competitor data, promotions and base prices spread across several tools. A pricing expert who starts with competitive intelligence gives an outnumbered team a clear first step that finance and IT can approve. The pitch is a 30-day start on the competitive layer, then price and promotion once the team is ready.

05

Outreach approach

The outreach runs five touches over twelve days, three days apart, and each touch takes a new angle. Touch one observes the signal and offers the competitive intelligence start. Touches two through four cover a price-change fact with an ROI calculator, forwardable material, and an IT or finance angle. Touch five is a short close offering a no-meeting pricing maturity assessment, after which outreach ends for that contact.

  1. 01 / DAY 1Signal observationNames the signal that fired, such as a new pricing executive or a new location, and offers the 30-day competitive intelligence start. Asks for a 30-minute working session on the retailer's categories.
  2. 02 / DAY 4Pricing reality checkShares a general industry fact that grocery items at national chains reprice several times a week, then points to an ROI calculator to size the gap.
  3. 03 / DAY 7Forwardable materialSends an executive ebook or a published case study that the champion can pass to finance or the executive team.
  4. 04 / DAY 10IT or finance angleSpeaks to integration effort or payback for the IT or finance lead, with a link to the matching solutions page.
  5. 05 / DAY 13No-meeting closeOffers the pricing maturity assessment as a no-meeting option, then ends outreach for that contact.

Advanced instructions (excerpt)

You write for [Company], a pricing and promotion optimization platform for grocery and convenience retailers. Teach first. Your readers are outnumbered pricing teams and the finance, executive and IT leaders who sign off. Outbound goes only to the monitored segment: US and Canadian grocers above a revenue threshold, convenience chains with 25 or more stores, wholesalers and co-ops.

Pick the angle from the signal that fired. Executive hiring points to the pricing leader, with a 30-day competitive intelligence start. Tech investment points to the IT or data leader, with an integration note. Geographic or physical expansion points to price zones for the merchandising team. Mergers and acquisitions point to harmonizing price image across banners. A product launch points to the category manager and price architecture for new items. If the signal or company data is missing, do not send.

Check the record first. If the company has an open deal, is a customer, or requested a demo in the last 90 days, write nothing. If earlier contact went quiet, acknowledge it briefly without restating old pitches. If you cannot tell which case applies, do not write.

Every email contains one specific observation, one sourced proof point, one line a champion can forward to finance, executives or IT, and one meeting ask with one link. Never claim a result that is not in the research.

SUBJECT Where your key value items stand against competitors

Hi [First name], Congratulations on the new pricing role at [Company]. A new pricing team often inherits competitor data in one tool, promotions in another and base prices somewhere else. [Company] collects competitor prices, promotions and availability at store level, matches them to your catalog and feeds them into the price recommendation. Many grocery and convenience teams start with that layer alone and see where they stand within 30 days. A convenience retailer in the published case studies grew gross profit by several million dollars within a few years of moving off manual pricing. Would Tuesday, November 17 or Thursday, November 19 suit a 30-minute working session on your categories and competitive set? Or grab a time that works here: [booking link]. Thanks,

Guardrails

  • Never state a price, discount or contract term.
  • Never share another retailer's results beyond the published case studies.
  • Never name AI vendors or models.
  • Hand off to a person and write nothing further when a reply asks about contract terms, a pending RFP or legal review, security review, state or tobacco pricing rules, an active customer's support issue, or a competitor's contract.
  • Never use exclamation marks or hype words.
09

Setup in HubSpot

  1. Create an enrollment rule that adds contacts at monitored companies when a qualifying signal fires and the contact holds a target persona title.
  2. Exclude current customers, companies with open deals, and anyone who requested a demo in the last 90 days.
  3. Set the sender to a named sales rep, with the sales lead as the fallback sender.
  4. Turn on Send without review so enrolled contacts receive emails automatically.
  5. Send Monday to Friday during business hours in each recipient's time zone. All plays launch together.
10

KPIs

  • Demo bookings from play contacts, tracked in performance reporting.
  • Share of enrolled contacts who reply within the five touches.
  • Bounce rate kept under 3 percent.

Questions about this play

Good questions.
Straight answers.

Why does this play start from signals instead of a static list?

Signals such as a new pricing executive or a new location show that pricing complexity is rising, which is when a pricing expert gets a hearing. Each email can then reference a real event at the company.

Who sends the emails?

A named sales rep sends from their connected inbox, and the sales lead is the fallback. Replies that raise contract, legal or security questions go to a person.

What happens when a contact replies?

Outreach stops for that contact, and the reply goes to a person to handle directly.
