What 68,000 AI Answers Reveal About AI Visibility (and How to Buy an AEO Tool)

What 68,000 AI answers say about AI visibility, radar motif on dark background

Two of the most useful AI search datasets of the year dropped on the same day. On September 14, NP Digital released its Fintech AI Visibility Index, a study of more than 68,000 AI-generated answers, and Azoma published buying criteria for AEO and AI visibility tools. Read together, they say three things: AI search is rewarding challenger brands over incumbents, a brand mention is worth more on Perplexity than on Gemini, and nobody selling you a visibility score has published a conversion number to go with it.

What is the Fintech AI Visibility Index?

NP Digital, the agency co-founded by Neil Patel, analyzed 68,000+ AI-generated answers to fintech prompts across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude Sonnet 4, and Google AI Overviews. The headline comparison: SoFi outranks Bank of America on every dimension measured. SoFi appeared in nearly 50% of relevant prompts, earned an average first-mention position of 3.75 versus 6.07 for Bank of America, and drew positive framing in 61.8% of its mentions against 46.8% for the incumbent.

That is the opposite of how traditional organic search behaves, where decades of domain authority favor legacy brands. NP Digital's read is that AI platforms weigh content relevance, topical consistency, and clarity more heavily than brand tenure or backlink history. If you are a challenger brand that has spent years losing page one to bigger names, AI answers are the first surface where the field actually tilts your way.

Why a mention on Perplexity is worth more than one on Gemini

The number strategists should pin to the wall: Gemini names an average of 10 brands per response. Perplexity names 6. NP Digital's Nikki Lam frames it as a supply question: it is easier to earn a mention on Gemini precisely because Gemini hands out more of them, so a slot on Perplexity carries more scarcity value.

PlatformAvg. brands named per answerWhat that means
Gemini10Easier to get named, more crowded answer
Perplexity6Harder to earn, each mention worth more

Buyers really are starting their research in AI answers

The demand side of this story comes from a July 2026 L.E.K. Consulting survey of 2,650 US consumers, cited in Azoma's release: 46% of AI users now begin purchase research on a standalone AI platform such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, or Claude, up from 25% in 2024. Traditional search fell from 43% to 24% over the same period. That is an inversion, not a trend line. It is the same shift we covered when ChatGPT's ad business passed a $1 billion run rate: the answers surface is where buying decisions are forming.

What should you look for in an AEO or AI visibility tool?

Azoma's release doubles as a procurement test, and it is a good one even accounting for the obvious self-interest. Three questions separate tools that deliver from tools that describe: Can it show you, prompt by prompt, where your brand appears across every agent that matters at the same time? Can it tell you which sources each agent drew on to make the recommendation? And can it help you fix what it finds, or does it stop at the report?

The citation-source question matters more than it looks. Azoma's Q2 2026 analysis of shopping agent citations found ChatGPT drawing 41% of citations from earned media, while Alexa for Shopping drew 73% from affiliate sites. Those are two different budgets. Winning one surface means funding PR and earned mentions. Winning the other means funding affiliate relationships. A single averaged visibility score hides that split and points your spend at the wrong lever.

One caution before you sign anything: neither NP Digital nor Azoma published a conversion rate, click-through rate, or revenue figure tied to any answer position. You are buying a position metric and supplying the revenue assumption yourself. Write that assumption down before the contract, not after the first quarterly review.

What to do this quarter without buying anything

Most B2B teams do not need a five-figure tracking license to start. Structure your money pages answer-first, add FAQ schema that mirrors real question phrasing, and go earn third-party mentions, since that is what ChatGPT actually cites. If you want tooling, start light: Rank Prompt tracks brand visibility in AI answers, Ubersuggest covers the keyword and content side from the same Neil Patel stable that produced this study, and Moz has been folding AI visibility into its platform. All three are in our discount marketplace.

And if you want the plumbing done for you, our SEO and AEO page build ships answer-first pages with schema included, or you can talk to an expert about where AI visibility fits your funnel.

Frequently asked questions

What is the NP Digital Fintech AI Visibility Index?

A study released September 14, 2026 analyzing more than 68,000 AI-generated answers to fintech prompts across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude Sonnet 4, and Google AI Overviews. Its headline finding is that SoFi outperforms Bank of America on mention frequency, first-mention position, and sentiment.

How many brands do Gemini and Perplexity name per answer?

Per NP Digital's study, Gemini names an average of 10 brands per response while Perplexity names 6, which makes an individual mention on Perplexity scarcer and arguably more valuable.

How many buyers start product research on AI platforms?

A July 2026 L.E.K. Consulting survey of 2,650 US consumers found 46% of AI users now begin purchase research on a standalone AI platform, up from 25% in 2024, while traditional search fell from 43% to 24%.

What should you look for in an AEO tool?

Three tests: prompt-level reporting across all major AI agents simultaneously, citation-source attribution showing which sources each agent relied on, and remediation workflows that go past reporting. Also ask every vendor for a conversion or revenue figure, because none of the September 14 releases included one.

Is AI search leveling the playing field for challenger brands?

The NP Digital data is consistent with that idea: SoFi beat Bank of America across every measured dimension despite the incumbent's far larger brand and backlink profile. AI platforms appear to reward content relevance and clarity over domain age, though one category study does not settle it.
