ChatGPT Ads Just Hit a $1 Billion Run Rate. Here Is the B2B Playbook
OpenAI announced on August 31 that ChatGPT Ads has passed a $1 billion annualized revenue run rate, less than 200 days after launch, and that self-serve ad buying is now opening across India, Europe, the Middle East and North Africa. Tens of thousands of advertisers are already spending. Advertising inside AI assistants just went from experiment to real channel, and B2B teams need a position on it this quarter. If you want the setup mechanics, our guide to advertising in ChatGPT for B2B covers them. This post covers what changed on August 31 and what to do about it.
What did OpenAI actually announce?
The August 31 announcement contains four updates that matter to marketers:
- A $1 billion annualized run rate in under 200 days, from tens of thousands of advertisers.
- Self-serve expansion. Ads Manager, which opened to US advertisers in a May beta, is rolling out across India, Europe, the Middle East and North Africa. ChatGPT ads are now available in more than 40 countries overall.
- Performance buying is now the default. CPC and outcome-optimized bidding account for the majority of campaigns, backed by pixel and Conversions API measurement, product feeds, geographic and platform targeting, and custom audiences.
- The early results OpenAI chose to publish: an ecommerce advertiser reporting 3x return on ad spend over 28 days, and a technology partner reporting that more than 80 percent of ad-driven ChatGPT traffic came from new customers.
Why should B2B marketers care?
Because OpenAI names your buyer in its own copy. The announcement describes people coming to ChatGPT when they are "choosing software for their business", comparing options, and deciding what to do next. That is a software evaluation happening inside an assistant with more than 1 billion weekly active users, and OpenAI is now selling placement in it on a cost-per-click basis.
The stat that should get your attention is the new-customer number. Sponsored placements surface vendors the buyer did not ask about, at the exact moment they are comparing options. More than 80 percent of ad-driven traffic arriving as new customers is the platform pitch in one line: this is a discovery channel, not a retargeting channel.

What should B2B teams do now?
Claim your Ads Manager account. Self-serve access is rolling out gradually and sign-up is open at ads.openai.com. Auction prices are set by competition, and most B2B categories have very little of it in ChatGPT today. That window does not stay open at a $1 billion run rate growing this fast.
Wire measurement before you spend. OpenAI ships a pixel and a Conversions API. Install both before the first campaign, or you will be optimizing a brand-new channel on clicks alone, which is how new channels get written off prematurely.
Run a capped CPC test on one bottom-funnel use case. Pick the single conversation your buyer most plausibly has with ChatGPT, something like comparing tools in your category, and put a modest capped budget against it. Judge it on pipeline assists after 28 days, not on impressions. If you want structure, our AI campaign plan and paid sprint starter are built for exactly this kind of new-channel test.
Keep earning organic citations. OpenAI is explicit that ads are labeled, kept separate from answers, and do not influence what ChatGPT recommends. Paid placement does not buy you into the answer itself. Showing up in the actual recommendation remains an AI search visibility problem, and the two lanes compound: the ad catches buyers the answer missed, the answer builds the trust the ad cannot.

Frequently asked questions
How big is ChatGPT's ads business now?
OpenAI reported a $1 billion annualized revenue run rate on August 31, 2026, reached in under 200 days, with tens of thousands of advertisers across more than 40 countries.
Who can buy ChatGPT ads today?
US advertisers have had self-serve access since the May 2026 Ads Manager beta. Self-serve is now rolling out across India, Europe, the Middle East and North Africa. Elsewhere, ads run through OpenAI's sales team and agency or adtech partners.
How are ChatGPT ads targeted?
Ads match the context of the current conversation, and depending on country and user settings, broader account context. Advertisers never see conversations, and every ad is labeled as sponsored.
Do ads change ChatGPT's answers?
No. OpenAI states that ads are kept separate from answers and do not influence what ChatGPT recommends, which is why organic AI search visibility remains a separate discipline from paid placement.
Should B2B companies advertise in ChatGPT?
If your buyers research software or services in ChatGPT, yes, at test scale: claim an Ads Manager account, install the pixel and Conversions API, and run one capped CPC test judged on pipeline over 28 days.
