How to advertise in ChatGPT, a B2B guide from Hacking Demand

You can buy ads in ChatGPT today, and there are three ways in: OpenAI's self-serve Ads Manager, open to any US business since May, a short roster of ad tech partners, and, as of August 11, an AdRoll pilot aimed squarely at SMB, mid-market, and B2B advertisers. The channel is six months old, has no minimum spend on the self-serve side, and most B2B teams have not touched it yet. Here is how access works, what it costs, and whether a demand gen team should test it now.

Who can advertise in ChatGPT right now?

OpenAI began testing ads in ChatGPT on February 9, 2026 for logged-in US users on the Free and Go tiers. On August 11, 2026 it launched ads in the UK, Mexico, Brazil, Japan, and South Korea. Paid tiers (Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, Education) do not see ads at all, which matters for B2B: a slice of your buyers is invisible to this channel by definition.

There are three routes in:

What do ChatGPT ads cost?

Since May 5, OpenAI's self-serve Ads Manager has been open to all US businesses with cost-per-click bidding, a recommended starting bid of 3 to 5 dollars, and no minimum spend, per PPC Land's reporting. That is a steep drop from the pilot's early days, when CPMs ran as high as 60 dollars and the minimum commitment was 50,000 dollars.

Two mechanics to know before you fund a campaign. Budgets stopped being hard daily caps in July; they now work as seven-day averages, so a single day can overspend. And as of August 17, automatic advanced matching switches on for existing ChatGPT web pixels unless you opt out, meaning hashed customer data starts flowing to OpenAI by default. If your site already runs the pixel, check that setting today.

How does ChatGPT ad targeting work without keywords?

There are no keywords. Campaigns run on "context hints", short phrases describing the conversations where your product is relevant. OpenAI matches ads against the topic of the current conversation, the user's past chats, and past ad interactions. Ads appear below the response, clearly labeled as sponsored, and do not influence the answer itself. Advertisers receive only aggregate views and clicks, never conversation data.

Custom audience uploads exist but require at least 25,000 matched users, which rules out most B2B target account lists. For accounts your list will never reach that way, the practical complement is capturing the AI-referred traffic you already get: visitor identification tools like Warmly and RB2B can tell you which companies are landing on your site from ChatGPT, and we compared the category in our visitor identification tools guide.

What does AdRoll's pilot mean for B2B teams?

AdRoll announced on August 11 that a select group of AdRoll and AdRoll ABM customers can now test advertising in ChatGPT, positioned at SMB, mid-market, and B2B marketers. Access is gated: existing customers go through their customer success manager, and AdRoll has not said when it widens. No pricing, participant counts, or performance figures were disclosed.

The significance is packaging, not access. Self-serve has been open since May; what smaller teams lacked was someone to run the channel. AdRoll CEO Vibhor Kapoor frames conversational AI as "the moments when options are being discovered", which is the middle of the journey most paid channels skip. A managed route matters for teams without a media buyer, because context hints, pixel plumbing, and a budget system that redefined itself nine weeks after launch add up to real operational overhead.

Should B2B demand gen teams test ChatGPT ads?

The honest numbers: search intelligence firm Adthena counted 7,378 distinct ChatGPT advertisers in mid-July, with placements up sharply quarter over quarter. Click-through rates are thin, around 0.68 percent overall per Similarweb data, with the best brands near 1.57 percent. Criteo reports users referred from ChatGPT convert at roughly 1.5 times the rate of other referral channels, but that is a vendor reporting on its own client base; independent verification has not been published.

Our own position: we installed OpenAI's conversion pixel on this site in June, ahead of the rollout, because we would rather have our own data than vendor benchmarks. That is the recommendation here too. If you are US-based with a clear offer page, a capped CPC test is cheap enough to answer the question yourself. Write context hints the way a buyer would phrase the question, send the click to a page that answers it, and watch the seven-day budget averaging. And if your buyers are asking ChatGPT about your category and you are not showing up in the organic answer either, fix that first: paid placement is rented, while AI search visibility compounds.

Frequently asked questions

Can anyone advertise in ChatGPT?

Any US business can use OpenAI's self-serve Ads Manager at ads.openai.com with no minimum spend. Outside the US, ads currently run in the UK, Mexico, Brazil, Japan, South Korea, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, with markets still expanding.

How much do ChatGPT ads cost?

There is no minimum spend in the self-serve Ads Manager. Bidding is cost per click, with OpenAI recommending a starting bid of 3 to 5 dollars per click as of May 2026.

Do ChatGPT ads change the answers ChatGPT gives?

No. OpenAI states ads are labeled as sponsored, appear separately below the response, and do not influence answers. Advertisers never see conversations, only aggregate views and clicks.

Does ChatGPT advertising work for B2B?

It is early. Click-through rates run under 1 percent, and the strongest conversion claims come from vendors measuring their own clients. AdRoll's August 11 pilot is the first route built specifically for SMB and B2B advertisers. A small capped test against your own conversion data is the only reliable answer right now.
