Jon Miller, the co-founder of Marketo and Engagio, came out of stealth on September 23, 2026 with Phave, an AI-native marketing automation platform built to replace Marketo, Pardot, Eloqua and HubSpot. It starts at $36,000 a year, reached general availability in August, and already runs marketing operations at enterprise teams including SambaNova, SPS Commerce, mabl, Servion and Hypha.

Phave spent two years in stealth and is backed by FirstMark, Ridge Ventures and Costanoa Ventures. Miller's co-founder is Nick Bonfiglio, who ran product and engineering at Marketo. That pedigree is the story: the people who built the category's dominant platform are now saying its architecture is obsolete.

What is Phave?

Phave is a marketing automation platform that replaces rules with reasoning. Every legacy MAP decision is a rule somebody wrote in advance: who belongs in a segment, what a lead is worth, which email fires next. Phave keeps rules for governance (consent, frequency caps, quiet hours) and hands the judgment calls to an AI engine called Maestro. "Rules are good at what is allowed, but bad at deciding what is best," Miller said in the launch release.

Marketers describe what they want in plain language instead of translating it into configuration. The platform also treats accounts and buying groups as records in their own right, each with its own score and lifecycle stage, so one account can hold several buying groups at different stages at once. Anyone who has tried to run buying-group plays in a lead-centric MAP knows why that matters.

What are Phave Playlists?

Phave's execution model borrows from music streaming. Campaigns are the albums, tactics are the songs, and Maestro computes a per-person Playlist: the touches most likely to reach the marketer's objective, ordered and timed for that individual. Before anything sends, it weighs everything else queued for that person across every campaign, acting as a traffic controller so two teams cannot hammer the same account in the same week. Per Miller's interview with MarTech, if a high-priority launch needs an account on Wednesday, an overlapping webinar invite gets rescheduled to Friday automatically.

How much does Phave cost?

Phave starts at $36,000 a year, and pricing is based on the number of people who actually receive something in a given month, not on database size. That is a direct shot at the legacy model of paying for every record you store. It also tells you exactly who this is for: enterprise B2B teams. A $36K floor is above most SMB and mid-market budgets.

Is Phave actually better than Marketo or HubSpot?

Treat the launch benchmark with care. Phave scored itself and the incumbents against 481 requirements drawn from twelve enterprise evaluations, with scoring and weighting done by Claude rather than by Phave's team. It came out at 2.97 against HubSpot's 2.46 and Marketo's 2.38. It is a more transparent exercise than most vendor benchmarks (the methodology is published on phave.com), but it is still vendor-published, and no analyst or customer has independently replicated it yet.

The more concrete differentiator is agent readiness. Phave exposes 319 tools through the Model Context Protocol, so external AI agents can operate it directly, and ops leaders can encode naming conventions, UTM standards and workflows as skills that agents follow. MarTech reports early adopters building campaigns two to three times faster. That fits the pattern we have tracked all month: Klaviyo went headless with MCP, and CRMs are moving inside ChatGPT and Claude. The MAP was the last holdout.

What should Marketo and HubSpot users do?

If you are an enterprise team on Marketo or Eloqua with a renewal inside 18 months, put Phave on the evaluation list. Ten production customers is early, but the founding team knows exactly where Marketo's bodies are buried, and switching costs are the only moat legacy MAPs have left.

If you are mid-market on HubSpot, nothing changes this quarter. Phave's floor prices out most of that segment, and HubSpot's own agent stack is moving fast. If you are earlier stage and the $36K number made you laugh, the rules-based tier still serves you fine: MailerLite, Moosend and GetResponse cover SMB automation at two orders of magnitude less.

Either way, the direction is set: marketing automation is becoming something agents operate, not something specialists click through. If you want your stack wired for that before your competitors get there, that is exactly what our workflow agents build does.

Frequently asked questions

What is Phave?

Phave is an AI-native marketing automation platform launched out of stealth on September 23, 2026. It uses a reasoning engine called Maestro to decide what each person, account and buying group should receive next, instead of relying on pre-written rules.

Who founded Phave?

Jon Miller, co-founder of Marketo and Engagio, and Nick Bonfiglio, formerly EVP of Global Product at Marketo. The company is backed by FirstMark, Ridge Ventures and Costanoa Ventures.

How much does Phave cost?

Phave starts at $36,000 per year. Pricing is based on how many people receive a touch in a given month, not on the size of your database.

Does Phave replace Marketo or HubSpot?

That is its stated goal. Phave positions itself as a full enterprise replacement for Marketo, Pardot, Eloqua and HubSpot, not a point solution layered on top. Today it is used by about ten enterprise companies, so it is early.

What are Phave Playlists?

Playlists are Phave's alternative to linear campaign flows. The AI mixes approved campaign tactics into a personalized sequence for each individual, and reprioritizes across competing campaigns automatically.
